Chalk Pastel Exploration

Chalk Pastel Exploration

Mar 25, 2023, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Join us for this four week course designed to give students a balanced combination of technical skills, instruction, and art theory; for the purpose of instilling not only memorized steps to achieve desired effects (i.e. drawing and shading) but also to develop a true love for the medium.

Night 1: 3 colors, 3D

The focus of the first night will be much like other classes, a venture into the technical side of pastel drawing. The goal will be to introduce new students to the nuances of soft pastel, as well as to re-acquaint students already familiar with pastels with this incredible medium. Instruction will focus largely on the basics of still life drawing with different colors, while reviewing such basics as perspective, scale and proportion.

Night 2: Dynamic Duo

Introducing charcoal pencils will add an entirely new dynamic to the previous week's lesson, but will also serve as a continuation of the material for review and muscle memory. Both of these nights, 1 and 2, have been explored in other lessons with success. Students will practice with a variation of still life models to sharpen skills without relying on dull repetition of looking at the same thing as last week.

Night 3: From Mind into Matter

While discussions about mood and setting will undoubtedly occur in the preceding lessons, night 3 will progress from the technical into more of the experimental. This will include things such as random pastel color assignments, discussions with exercises in concepts such as cubism, post-modernism or surrealism, and finally, I will be having the students create their own still life piece from items I'll bring along as an exercise in visualizing what they want to draw, before they begin drawing it (please know this step is secret--not to go in the flyer or ad, it's a surprise).

Night 4: Continuation

This week will be used as a continuation space for material covered the week prior, with more time to further experiment with the themes taught before. As the last class in the four-week session, this will be used both as a wrap up night and will also include a final challenge, catered to the needs and learning style of the students attending.

Registration is $80 for the four night class, this covers all materials. All adult programming fees support our financial aid for our children's programming!
