Music Studio

At a time when Music and Art curriculum is in danger of disappearing from our public schools, the Music Studio at the Eastern Iowa Arts Academy provides a critical service to our children to not only explore the creativity and skill set that may live inside of them, but to have the opportunity to hone and excel in those skills as they progress through the various individual and group offerings through our Music Program.

The educational and social benefits of music performance and education are well documented. Children actively engaged in music gain social, educational, and emotional benefits by collaborating with their peers and challenging themselves to excel in challenging situations. Once enrolled with a yearly membership, students and parents can confer with EIAA staff to assess their interests and to develop a plan based on their specific needs and interests. Through our programming, students are allowed to choose a wide variety of instruments and instruction that will provide them a path to success. Starting with small group introductory instrument classes, students can engage with their peers in a low-stress environment to learn the basics of a particular instrument. Interested students can then advance to bands and be grouped with like-minded peers to form ensembles that rehearse weekly and perform music of their choosing (under direction from EIAA staff). During this time, if students are particularly interested in continuing to grow, they are offered the opportunity to take private lessons and EXCEL Classes from EIAA-approved teachers where their growth can expand exponentially.

YOUTH PROGRAMMING

With a yearly membership, students can enroll in an unlimited number of member classes. A variety of classes are offered each eight-week term. Past classes have included: percussion, guitar, piano and keyboard, junk rhythm, vocal ensemble, vocal production, and rock band.

In addition to regular Member Classes each term members can participate in:

Weekly Saturday Open Studio

Saturday Open Studio is a chance to stay engaged in arts activities all year long. Students can come to practice their instrument, or continue with an art project that began in class. Instructors are available for assistance. Students can also create a new art project, play with materials they have never used before, try a new musical instrument, sing into a microphone and even record themselves in our recording studio.

Monthly Teen Hang Night

Teen Hang is a social event for teens only to meet other teens who are interested in the arts in the Cedar Rapids area. This is free to any teen, and attended by most of the teens who are enrolled in classes at the Music and Arts Studios. They have fun socializing and playing games, with free time to create in the music and arts studios. Each event has an engaging theme and is a great place to meet the people who hang out around our facility, including teachers. No parents allowed – take a night off knowing your teen is in good hands!

EXCEL Classes

EXCEL classes offer advanced learning opportunities to our members. These small group classes are tailored to the students’ abilities and help propel their learning and deepen their engagement. These classes, typically presented in a workshop format, are offered throughout the year and are programmed based on the needs of the current member base. There are additional fees for these classes. Students must be members to join the class.

Private Lessons

Students who want one-on-one instruction can contact us to set up lessons with an instructor suitable for their desired area of study. The fee for the lessons is determined by the instructor.

Rock Bands

Throughout the year auditions are held for placement in Rock Bands. Students will be grouped in ensembles to form bands which suit their preferred genres (rock, metal, country, punk). Rehearsal directors run the weekly rehearsals for the various bands to advance their repertoire and improve their performance skills. Performance opportunities have included the EIAA end-of-term showcases as well as appearances at community events including, NewBo Arts Fest, The Irish District Music and Arts Festival, the Riley Smith Youth Music Festival, and school socials.
